Construction is slated to start October 2023 and be substantially complete by June 18, 2025. The project overall consists of a new, ground up two-story steel structure consisting of approx. 118,055 GSF. The Protoplex is comprised of a 30 ft clear height high-bay area and an adjoining two-story office and lab building. The high bay area contains partitioned research spaces for ceramics, metallurgy, and general-purpose manufacturing. The office and lab building contains research office suites, testing labs, conference rooms, a 26' tall meeting room, and a loading dock. For vertical circulation, there are two sets of stairs and an elevator. A large mechanical penthouse and cooling tower are located at the building's roof. Geothermal plan has been added scope from the previous budget effort. The total building area will be roughly 118,055 gross square feet, with 77,512 square feet finished out within the base budget, representing the Priority 1 program. If additional funding for equipment becomes available during construction, the remaining 40,543 square feet of Priority 2 can be fit out as well. The building exterior facade is anticipated to be metal composite materials panels on the high bay volume with curtainwall providing daylight into the high bay from the south, and metal panel with storefront/curtainwall on the northern office volume. Associated site work includes grading to accommodate the new footprint, retaining walls, access drives, approximately 80 parking spaces and the possibility for demolition of four existing structures. The civil work includes minimal demolition work and some tree removal, earthwork moving, utility and sewer installations, and paving for roadways, drives, parking lots, curbing, and sidewalks. The major demolition activities needed to clear the site for this new building are being handled by another project for S&T. The project consists of well drilling of 204 geothermal wells, piping, header work and stub up in to the main building, with minor site prep work including SWPPP plan.
