https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/news/2023/07/26/latest-details-new-frayser-high-school-site-plan.html The new $90 million Frayser High School has moved forward with the closing of bids for a construction manager at risk (CMAR), which is an initial step in the long construction process to build a new campus. And that request for proposals (RFP) from Memphis-Shelby County Schools also adds in new insights and details into how the project on Dellwood Avenue and Steele Street may look upon completion. The build aims to combine Trezevant High School and Martin Luther King Jr. College Preparatory High School into one at the new campus. A site plan filed with the RFP shows that not only will most of the site be completely rebuilt, but also that even more construction is likely to come in the future. "CMAR will be expected to assist the district with identifying portions of the facility, as drawn by [architecture and engineering] teams, that will be considered for future construction plans that will be funded with an additional funding source outside of the initial contracted agreement," the RFP states. An existing 1,620-seat auditorium is to be the only space currently on the Martin Luther King Jr. College Prep site that remains. Directly to the east of it, there are to be 120 parking spaces. Directly to the west, a new plaza, and to the south, an expansion of the parent drop-off area and 85 parking spaces. The new high school is planned to be built on the site of the current high school, and the site plan indicates it is where most classes are to take place. To the east of that school, there is green space marked as "potential future construction." To the north, the high school is attached to new buildings. Directly north of that is a new gymnasium with 1,000 seats and a small community room. Above that, there are 151 parking spaces on the site plan. The current football/soccer field is slated to be moved slightly to the center of the campus. An internal road is to enclose the entire campus, with both car and pedestrian exits on both Dellwood Avenue and Steele Street. Internally, the campus is to be connected with pedestrian walkways throughout. Selecting a construction manager at risk is one of the last steps before a project can begin. With bidding now closed, Memphis-Shelby County Schools can select a CMAR and move forward on the project, with a goal of the new facility opening in August 2026. Construction is targeted to begin in the summer of 2024. It is one of three projects being funded by a new Shelby County wheel tax. The new tax will also provide funding for Regional One to begin remodeling the health system's main campus and funding for a new high school in Cordova. _____________________ A detailed scope has not been identified. The project is included in the county's 2021-202 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). As of June 8, 2022, further details regarding design and construction have not been identified.* *Project information, including timeline and contacts, has been obtained through public sources.
