The former Smoky River Coal Mine (SRCM) is located near the hamlet of Grande Cache, Alberta. It was operated by Smoky River Coal Limited (SRCL) until entering receivership in 2000, leaving the mine area improperly abandoned and un-reclaimed. Authorizations to operate with assumed responsibilities for a large portion of the former SRCL mine area was granted in 2004 to another company. The remaining area of the former SRCM, under no current authorizations (the Site), was partially reclaimed; however, ongoing monitoring has identified issues which require further assessment including slope stability at the M1 rock dump and selenium release from natural rock within disturbed areas. As a result of the above findings, EPA is looking to retain a qualified professional contractor to plan and execute appropriate next steps, as described in the project objectives below to further assess site conditions to determine what steps may be required to mitigate unacceptable risk, if any.
