The Gwinnett County Board of Education (Board) represented by Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) requests competitive sealed bids for the Pedestrian Bridge Repair at Collins Hill High School. Scope of Work This project is for the repairs the pedestrian bridge at Collins Hill High School. The overall condition of the bridge is considered to be in good condition; however, the deteriorating steel requires immediate attention. The bridge spans to two concrete abutments one on either side of the creek and spans approximately 45'-0". The structure sits at an estimated maximum height off the ground of 20' at midspan. The pre-engineered steel bridge consists of (2) steel trusses spanning to the concrete abutments on either side of the creek. The depth of each truss was an estimated 90" from top of 6"x6" steel tube top chord to bottom of 6"x6" bottom chord. An estimated 52.5" of the truss depth is utilized as the guardrail/handrail system for the bridge. Vertical 4"x4" steel tubes were spaced at approximately 7'-0" on center in each truss. Steel tubes measuring 1.5"x1.5" were spaced at 0'-3" on center and span between each vertical. Diagonal "X" bracing occurred between each vertical, behind the 1.5"x1.5" tube railing and was observed as 2"x2" steel tubes. A 6"x4" horizontal steel tube spanned between the two trusses at each vertical. Diagonal bracing occurred between each 6"x4" horizontal tube under the deck and was observed as 3"x3"x1/4" angles. The width of the bridge was measured at an estimated 88". Channels measured to be 3" deep sit on top of the diagonal bracing. Wood decking spans over the 3" deep channels between each truss. Repairs are to include: o Removing and replacing the 3" deep channels running under the wood decking with like material. o The wood decking should also be removed and replaced with like material. o The bridges' baseplates and anchor bolts shall be cleaned of all dirt and debris to prevent deterioration of the connections. o All other bridge steel should be cleaned of all rust, loose mill scale, loose paint and any other deposited material and repainted. o The level of surface preparation is determined by the coating specification. Surface preparation standards are defined by the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers International (NACE) and are provided below. o Most products require the steel to be cleaned to a SSPC-SP3 degree prior to applying a protective coating. o The protective coating should be capable of withstanding the environmental conditions. o After the steel has been cleaned, a testing lab should inspect the members to determine if more than 10% of the steel was lost through deterioration. o Steel having more than 10% degradation of material needs to be replaced or repaired. o If it is determined that some of the existing steel members need to be repaired, GCPS will work with the contractor to provide the necessary details specific for each condition and structural member. All remedial work shall be completed by a licensed contractor experienced with steel repair services All questions or commentary must be received in Bonfire under the "Message Center" section no later than 10:00 AM, Wednesday, October 25, 2023, to allow for appropriate and timely responses Term/Project Schedule Requirements Because this bridge is located adjacent to the high school, spanning over a small creek and connecting the high school to the softball and aquatic center, the bridge is used throughout the school days as students change classes. Due to this, repairs cannot be going while school is in session. GCPS would like the initial repairs to being over the districts scheduled November Break and then commence again over winter break. Below are the dates of both breaks. o November Break: After 3pm on November 17, 2023 through November 26, 2023 o Winter Break - After 3pm December 15, 2023 through January 3, 2024
