The navigation lock is located near Illinois Waterway River Mile No. 286 on the Des Plaines River. Project requires construction of an Engineered Channel downstream from Brandon Road Lock and Dam to control the migration of aquatic nuisance species (ANS) upstream. This Engineered Channel will include an electrical barrier, acoustic fish deterrents, and an air bubble curtain, with additional EC area for future deterrent technologies. The construction of the Engineered Channel requires excavation of high-quality bedrock identified as the Elwood Formation Dolomite layer. Excavation involves removing roughly 80,000 cubic yards of bedrock in order to establish design subgrade for cast-in-place construction of concrete channel walls and floor. Existing channel depth is 15 feet under normal tailwater conditions. Existing approach channel was excavated into bedrock during original construction of the lock in the 1920s and 1930s thus top surface of bedrock in channel bottom is high quality. General extents of excavation footprint shown is shown in yellow on the Figure 1 below. Footprint shown is roughly 1,500 feet in length by 150 feet in width.
