This project allows for the addition of bulk chemical storage tanks at the Southbridge Regional Water Treatment Plant. During the construction of the Southbridge Water Plant some bulk chemical storage tanks were not installed to reduce costs. As demand increases in the Southbridge Industrial Park area it is imperative that the plant always have an adequate chemical supply on hand. This Project will also allow the water system to better meet the revised Hazardous Materials storage regulations and improve the safety of the area around the Zenith Water Treatment Plant for the neighbors and for Hazardous Response members should a leak of the gaseous Chlorine occur. The project will also reduce the exposure of plant staff to these chemicals and reduce the amount of physical activity required to transfer and handle the chemicals. The project will ensure a more uniform chemical dosage, which will improve water quality to the community. Federal regulations governing the storage and handling of hazardous materials are getting more stringent. Water quality requirements are setting lower threshold limits for certain constituents. This would create a safer environment for water plant staff. This project is included in the fy 2024-2028 Capital Improvement Program. As of May 23, 2023, further details regarding design and construction timelines have not been identified. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
