Alterations to York Memorial Collegiate Institute to repair damages caused by fire. The scope of work also includes an addition will allow the school to add 368 spaces for a total of 1,300 required as the school merges with George Harvey Collegiate. Because the school is a Designated Heritage building, efforts were undertaken immediately after the fire to salvage key elements and artifacts and to stabilize the remaining structure. The Heritage aspect also means that the reconstructed building will recreate many significant features of the original school that were lost in the fire, such as the auditorium. All areas within the YMCI footprint will be refurbished and modernized, the project will include Improved overall circulation and wayfinding; Modernized staff areas with better lines of site to both classroom and outdoor areas. A fully accessible school with new elevator and washroom improvements. The resulting school will have an area of 183,740 square feet. The project is made up of three Phases; Phase 1 - the preparation of the site for reconstruction and work on the Heritage south facade. This is followed separately under 1700 Keele Street. Phase 2 - the reconstruction of the third floor, auditorium and the overall original YMCI footprint. Phase 3 - the reconstruction of 2 Trethewey and Annex as part of the creation of dedicated academic space in this area. Phase 2 and 3 are intended to be built at the same time. TIMELINE: Provincial funding for design was allocated as of early 2020. An architect was secured through Request For Proposals in 2021. Detailed design is underway. Further working drawings, tender and construction schedules are expected winter 2023/early 2024.
