The Planning Commission of the town of Southbury, CT seeks qualified consultants interested in performing a study of pedestrian safety on Main Street South. Main Street South is a town-owned 2-lane road that extends approximately 3 miles from Main Street North (RT 6/67) southwesterly to the Ichabod Road Bridge over I-84. The study will focus on the area from RT 6/67 to RT 172, both state intersections. Main Street South includes land zoned for commercial and economic development purposes along with the town government center, nearby schools and churches. A Streetscape Plan for Main Street South was adopted in 1990 and the Southbury Center Plan in 1994. They provide an overall landscape and streetscape design, including street trees, lawn and other plantings, on and off the street right-of-way, as well as sidewalks, building position, and parking layout that is appropriate for each area and unifies the character of our scenic, rural town. The Streetscape Plan was re-affirmed and adopted again in 2014. Most of the elements of the Streetscape Plan have been installed and are a vital component of our community. The Streetscape Plan will be the basis of the study. The study is to be a needs and deficiencies evaluation of 7 intersections and existing crosswalks, ADA ramps, pedestrian signal equipment and timings at the intersections and crosswalks. The final report should include priorities for items needing improvement and other design recommendations and suggestions. Recommendations to expand on our public spaces is also requested. For submission and further information, please contact DeLoris Curtis, AICP, town of Southbury Land Use Administrator at Planning@southbury-ct.gov. or 203.262.0634 or mailing to 501 Main Street South, Southbury, CT 06488 The method of contractor selection has not been determined at this time.
