The Ontario Science Centre will find its new home in a custom-built, state-of-the-art facility, as well as in the preserved and upgraded iconic Cinesphere and Pod complex. It will bring exciting science-based educational programming to the heart of Ontario Place. This project will proceed as part of the redevelopment of Ontario Place and will include Interior fit-out and finishes for Pods 1 and 2 and Adjacent Spaces at Ontario Place. Pod 1 is to be renovated in its entirety. Pod 2 Level 40 is to be renovated including new rooms, a kitchen renovation and a new employee washroom, while Level 50 is out of scope. A new mechanical enclosure is to be constructed on the exterior of Bridge 10 and below Pod 1. A sewage transfer station is to be installed in the mechanical enclosure. The main entrance from Bridge 10 to Pod 1 is to be renovated and supplied with an accessible lift. The secondary entrance from Bridge 10 to Pod 1 that is currently entombed is to be re-opened and renovated. The Level 40 corridor adjacent to Pod 1 is to be renovated including a new Universal Washroom. The work will include, but not be limited to: minor demolition, a new mechanical enclosure exterior to the pods, a new sewage transfer station, supply and install heating radiators including plumbing connections and controls, provide new/ re-work HVAC distribution, supply and install de-stratification fans, plumbing work, supply and install an accessible lift, supply and install ceiling lighting trusses, supply and install electrical wiring and controls to new lighting, supply and install and modify new power distribution, modification of the fire alarm system, modification to standpipe system, upgrade the emergency lighting system, conduit for security/ door access and IT infrastructure, concrete floor repairs, new subfloor insulation, new subfloor and flooring installation, new doors and hardware, supply and install partitions and drywall, install new spray foam ceiling treatment, paint, supply and install window covering power and controls, and provide construction clean-up. The work includes administrative tasks as outlined in the drawings and specification. The project will also include a large underground parking lot for more than 2,000 cars plus a surface parking lot with space for 600 cars. TIMELINE: The province announced that it will be restoring and maintaining the Cinesphere and Pods, with Ontario Science Place operating these elements as a satellite location for its science-based exhibitions and programming. The province of Ontario announced funding for redesign of the existing paces for tender and construction in 2025/2026 and opening in 2025. *A pre-design of updates to pods 1 & 2 was prepared by Partisans.
