Construction of a Light Rapid Transit (LRT) corridor. Stage 2 ION will see the ION Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service between Kitchener and Cambridge converted to Light Rapid Transit (LRT) network across the region's three urban centres. Preferred route is from Fairway Road, Hwy 8, King St E, Preston, Eagle St N, Pinebush Rd, Hespeler Rd to Beverley St to approximately Main St. Phase One would have 19 stations and voer 19 km. Phase 2 would have 8 stations and cover 18 km. TIMELINE: Design is preliminary. The Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) is complete. Council has directed staff to re-evaluate the south terminus location and to develop a strategy to request funding from the federal and provincial governments. Business Case development is anticiapted to begin Q1 2024 with completion in 2025. Further update may be available fall 2023. Preliminary cost estimate for the project is 1.25 billion. Project will proceed pending provincial/federal funding assistance. Project website is: www.Stage2ION.ca.
