The 11th Street Bridge Park project will transform the old, unused span of the 11th Street Bridge into a signature, elevated park for the District-- comparable to the High Line in New York City. Spanning the Anacostia River, the park would link Historic Anacostia with the Navy Yard. Preliminary plans include bike and pedestrian trails, outdoor performance spaces, play areas, gardens, posted information about the river and its ecosystem, and a dock to launch boats and kayaks to explore the river. No funds allocated for the purpose of the 11th Street Bridge Park project may be awarded or disbursed to any entity for purposes of construction until at least 50 percent of the total projected project construction costs have been raised from private donors. No District funds may be awarded or expended for the purpose of operations or maintenance of the 11th Street Bridge Park. However, District funds can be used for inspections and maintenance of the bridge asset. A large, diverse group of stakeholders- led by THEARC in Ward 8 and with the assistance of DDOT- has been working to develop plans for this park. They expect to raise the required 50% of the projected cost for construction from private donors. As of June 27, 2023, permit applications have been approved. Bidding is anticipated to advertise for solicitation in the second half of 2023. Construction is expected to commence during first quarter 2024. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
