PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project consists of water main, sewer, and paving improvements for Arlington Street and Shirley Drive between W. Lincoln Road and W. Maple Road within the City of Birmingham, Michigan. Underground improvements include combined sewer upgrades and water main replacement. We assume most of the water main will be installed using open-cut installation methods and combined sewer upgrades will be installed by conventional excavation methods. It is assumed that maximum excavation depths for the underground work will be limited to approximately 12 feet below pavement grade. The existing pavements are proposed to be reconstructed with a new Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavement section. SCOPE OF SERVICES The field operations, laboratory testing, and engineering report preparation were performed under direction and supervision of a licensed professional engineer. Our services were performed according to generally accepted standards and procedures in the practice of geotechnical engineering in this area. Our scope of services for this project is as follows: 1. We performed a total of eleven (11) soil borings within the proposed project extending to a depth of 15 feet each. We measured the existing pavement section material (bituminous concrete) and identified the type and condition of subgrade soils. 2. We performed laboratory testing on samples obtained from the soil borings. Laboratory testing included visual engineering classification, moisture content, organic matter content (loss-onignition), dry density, unconfined compressive strength determinations, and grain size distribution determinations. 3. We prepared this engineering report. Our report includes recommendations for pavement reconstruction and underground utility replacement construction.
