The Chaboya Division, opened in 1981, is responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of a portion of the existing VTA bus fleet. The Chaboya division currently operates and maintains a fleet of 189 buses comprising of 30', 35' and 40' Diesel & Diesel/Battery Hybrid bus models. The Chaboya division also includes a training facility for bus operators and maintainers, which includes a fleet of 17 buses dedicated for training in addition to the operational fleet. As part of VTA's goal of operating a 100% Zero Emission fleet by 2040 following the Innovative Clean Transit (ICT) regulation set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), VTA will be procuring 55 Battery Electric Buses (BEB) to replace existing diesel fueled buses at the Chaboya Division that are nearing the end of their useful life. The future phases of Zero Emission Bus (ZEB) procurements and supporting infrastructure are contingent upon an on-going ZEB Blueprint planning study that will evaluate and recommend the ZEB technology for VTA's decision on long-term ZEB implementation. The first phase of the Chaboya Division Zero Emission Bus (ZEB) Infrastructure project ("ZEB Project") will include (i) installation of BEB charging infrastructure with 40 overhead inverted pantograph type dispensers; (ii) installation of canopy structures for bus parking and overhead dispensers with capability to install solar panels that will be integrated with a microgrid system; and (iii) site modifications for a new electrical service and electrical distribution infrastructure necessary for the ZEB Project.
