SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A project the City of Summerside has been discussing for a long time will soon be under construction. At the Oct. 3 council meeting, Gordon MacFarlane, the city’s deputy CAO, announced that tenders would go out in early October for the East-West Housing Corridor – formerly called the east-west connector. Once a tender is awarded, the plan would be to begin construction this fall, starting on Water Street and heading North. The plan would be to connect the eastern portion of downtown Summerside with the uptown shopping district, aiming to reduce traffic. The need for a connector had been discussed as far back as 1998 but had never come together. Currently, about 5,000 to 7,000 cars enter the city through Water Street and later turn on MacEwen Road, toward the businesses at the north end of Granville Street – cars which may use a completed corridor. The city has budgeted $5.5 million toward phase one of the project this year. “The traffic trends didn’t increase, necessarily, as quickly as predicted,” said MacFarlane. “But recently, there’s obviously been more traffic, but there’s also been much more of a need for housing.” In addition to helping curb Water Street congestion, the corridor would open up about 345 acres of land, allowing for about 2,000 new units of housing development. “Over the last couple of years, it’s evolved into something that will help us address the housing problem, too,” said Coun. Justin Doiron. “It’s sort of a win-win.” In his opinion, a project like this is needed in the city, and he’s glad to see it finally happening. “It’s fantastic to be a part of it, something that’s been in the works for so long,” he said. “It’s exciting to see physical changes about to happen.”
