Some playground fixtures at Speier Park in Okoboji may soon be available to the highest bidder. Updates and improvements to the park have been in the works for some time, and city officials. Construction could begin in early September with an expected completion date of May 3, 2024, which Okoboji City Administrator Michael Meyers said would leave about three weeks for new playground equipment to be installed before Memorial Day. City crews plan to remove the current playground equipment themselves, and the only items they plan to reincorporate into the new playground are the swings. The playground items will then be auctioned off. City officials are still ironing out details of the auction, but they plan to close bids at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 12. Meyers said last week the city had already received word from several parties interested in the equipment. In addition, the city council was told members of the Speier family - which donated the land for use as a city park in 1966 - were particularly interested in the merry-go-round. The council generally agreed the family should be somewhat entitled to any of the available items. Meyers said during last week's city council meeting he would look into the legality of donating public property to the family and the best way to potentially do so..
