1.0 Scope of Work Provide a brief statement of the overall project, including goals and objectives. This project will replace the failing timber superstructure for the Roaring Run Road Bridge (FSR 740 MP 0.169) with a concrete cored slab, as well as update the bridge railing and add approach guardrail on each side. The work also includes installing a sleeper slab on each bridge approach and also asphalt pavement for the wearing surface. 2.0 Background Provide a general description of the requirement, describing the acquisition history (if applicable), the current environment, and the vision of the future of the requirement. If information technology is a factor, provide pertinent technical facts. The existing 740-0.169 Roaring Run bridge structure uses a nail-laminated timber superstructure which has been identified in recent bridge inspections as rotting on the edges due to a constant presence of moisture. Inspections have identified the need for replacement of the bridge superstructure. The existing concrete abutments are sound and in acceptable condition. As a result, these abutments will remain in place and be used with the new concrete superstructure. Bridge railing does not meet current standards and so will be upgraded. In addition, bridge approach railing will be added to meet current standards for the maintenance level of the road. Adding sleeper slabs at the approaches and asphalt paving for a wearing course will protect this bridge superstructure from wear and excessive deterioration from gravel, thereby lengthening the life of the overall bridge structure and reducing annual maintenance.
