The City of Port Coquitlam is looking to commission the creation, development, fabrication, delivery, and installation of a permanent, site-specific, sculptural artwork to honour Terry Fox' legacy - with a focus on his childhood and youth in Port Coquitlam. Terry Fox is a Canadian hero and inspiration, but first, he is Port Coquitlam's hometown hero. Growing up in Port Coquitlam, he is a significant figure for the community. The new sculptural artwork aims to honour and perpetuate his legacy. The proposed project will be located at the new Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC) at 2150 Wilson Avenue. Opened in October 2021, as "one of the biggest projects in the City's history," the facility houses a library, three arenas, gymnasium, leisure pool, fitness centre and studios, licensed preschool, senior and youth facilities, concession, and indoor and outdoor multi-purpose spaces. In addition to the proposed sculpture, the facility pays tribute to Terry Fox through the Terry Fox Library, Terry Fox Hometown Square, and an outdoor ground intervention called Marathon of Hope. In 2024, it will also host permanent and rotating exhibits, titled Terry Fox: Inspiring Local Champions. With thousands of visitors each week, the PCCC is an ideal site for this sculptural commission. With the support of Terry Fox family, the City of Port Coquitlam is honoured to be able to inspire residents and other Canadians, by bringing this sculpture into a prominent, accessible place for people to gather and engage with the artwork.
