The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is proposing to replace the S-228 (English) bridge over Black River in Lee County. The project includes replacing the existing bridge structure and constructing the roadway to meet current design and safety standards. The existing S-228 facility is comprised of two, 10-foot travel lanes. The proposed roadway section will provide two, 11-foot travel lanes with 2-foot paved and 4-foot grassed shoulders. The purpose of the project is to correct structural deficiencies of the existing S-228 bridge over Black River. As of August 22, 2023, a design team has not been identified. Construction is scheduled for Spring 2024 until September 2025 *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
