The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) proposes to replace several existing bridges along I-20 in Aiken County. These include bridges over the South Edisto River [westbound and eastbound bridges], over S-980 (Gregory Road) [westbound and eastbound bridges], over SC-19 (Edgefield Highway) [westbound bridge], and over the North Augusta Greenway [westbound bridge] The purpose of the project is to correct structural and functional deficiencies associated with the existing bridges. SCDOT identified these deficiencies during routine inspections of the bridges. The project is needed because I-20 provides the only interstate link between Columbia, South Carolina and Augusta, Georgia and carries freight, commuters, and travelers between these cities and to points beyond. SCDOT’s maintenance efforts for the existing bridges will continue until the proposed new bridges are completed and the existing bridges are no longer needed. As of August 22, 2023, Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2024 and end in Spring 2025. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
