As of October 20, 2023, per owner, no decision has been made at this time on a design team. The Mary N. Smith Cultural Enrichment Center requires renovations and improvements to continue to and expand on meeting the needs of the community. The facility is located at 24577 Mary N Smith Road, Accomac, VA 23301. It was built in 1953 and is approximately 52,000 sq. ft. with 15 acres of land. The goal is to use the facility to strengthen the community efforts to improve youth enrichment opportunities, enhance cultural arts program availability, and increase senior health and wellness activities while preserving the history of the school. The design should be approached with consideration for potential addition of other services and/or uses onto the property and/or building in the future, such as apartment units and/or single-family homes. Request for services may include, but are not limited to Perform a site review Familiarize itself with the history of the school and current usage of the facility Analyze the functionality of the second floor Preservation of the building Prepare preliminary engineering report and conceptual design Perform an environmental review (to be costed separately) Address the needs of the Mary N. Smith Alumni Association, Inc. and the community by: Designing community and commercial spaces for economic development, professional offices, private meeting rooms, multi-purpose room(s) Designing space(s) for youth enrichment with options for academic and recreational activities Proposing areas for cultural arts and senior health and wellness programming Creating a space for a multi-media conference room including necessary state of the art technology requirements Incorporating space and access for museum Assessing the incorporation of apartment units and/or single-family housing Recommending options to assist with sustainability of the facility The County reserves the right to retain selected firm for implementation of the construction project upon award of funding.
