This countywide program will supplement the improvements to pedestrian facilities currently being completed under the Sidewalk Retrofit program to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. The focus of this program is to construct new sidewalk or bicycle segments where gaps, or missing links, occur between existing pedestrian and bicycle facilities with the goal of increasing neighborhood connections with existing infrastructure. Elimination of missing links will provide more continuous pedestrian facilities and encourage walking and biking as alternate modes of transportation. Connecting neighborhoods encourages walking and biking between adjoining subdivisions rather than using vehicular modes of travel. Priority will be given to segments that provide safe routes to schools, transit stations/stops, multi-use trail systems and community centers. Identification of missing links and prioritization for project lists is being led by the Division of Planning and Permitting. Current project sites included construction of new sidewalks and neighborhood connectors in Point of Rocks, Spring Ridge and Ballenger Creek areas. Project development activities from the design phase through construction will be executed through the Division of Public Works. This project is included in the county’s fy 2024-2029 Capital Improvement Program. As of August 1, 2023, further details regarding design and construction timelines have not been identified. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
