The University of New Hampshire will soon be expanding and renovating the Jackson Estuarine Lab (JEL), a satellite facility owned by UNH and located on Great Bay at 85 Adams Point Road in Durham, NH. JEL features well-equipped facilities where scientists conduct field-based and experimental research on physical and biological components of coastal ecosystems. Research at JEL has advanced our understanding of coastal ecosystems, environmental quality, and connection between watershed and human health in New Hampshire, the region, and the world. This project will provide an array of amenities to complement and augment the existing laboratory and support spaces at JEL. The approximate 4,500 SF (2,200 SF footprint) addition will include essential community collaborative workspace where various outside groups and organizations can come and work side by side with University researchers on an array of estuarine initiatives and studies. It will provide high bay space for boat and vehicle repairs with a hoist system to lift and maneuver the boats and vehicles. It will include support spaces for dive equipment and tools, showers, and changing rooms. The renovation will also transform 1,084 sf of antiquated lab space to address the rapidly growing needs of the Water Quality Lab.
