The proposed architectural design for the County of Brant’s new main branch library was approved by council on June 27, 2023. The concept design by Hamilton-based DPAI Architecture Inc. includes restoration work on the original Paris Town Hall, built in 1854 and now called the Bawcutt Centre. “We are thrilled to have Council’s support to move the new main branch library to the next steps,” said Library CEO Kelly Bernstein. “This library will be a cultural anchor where the community can gather, learn, and grow. It’s an honour to have the opportunity to preserve a vital piece of our community’s heritage for future generations.” The 27,800 square foot facility will include a MakerSpace lab, café, and kitchen while the historic Opera Hall will be available for public performances. An outdoor program area and reading garden are also part of the plan. “The new main library and Bawcutt Centre will be a vibrant community hub for diverse and collaborative cultural expressions and gatherings for all residents of the County of Brant,” said mayor David Bailey. “It will bring new and exciting library services to our every-growing community, provide much needed special event space, and restore and preserve an important piece of County of Brant heritage.” Site preparation and demolition of an addition built in 1964 will get underway in July, while finalized designs will be put to tender over the summer and returned for Council approval in the fall. Upon approval, the project is anticipated to take about two years to complete.
