Redevelopment of the existing St Lawrence Centre for the Arts, for construction of a state-of-the-art cultural hub and community asset for the city, offering flexible spaces such as a theater, rehearsal hall, studios and workshops. The new venue will feature two main performance spaces, replacing the 868-seat Bluma Appel Theatre and the more intimate 499-seat Jane Mallet Theatre in the existing facility. The larger of the two spaces, located on the first and second floor, will seat at least 900 patrons when configured for theatre and dance, according to the most recent designs. The auditorium will be fitted with automated lifts that will allow artists to reconfigure the space as needed, providing the option for in-the-round settings, thrust stages or traditional proscenium styles. The fourth floor, above the main theatre, will house the St. Lawrence Centre's acoustic hall, a 400-seat venue facing westward with a direct view of the CN Tower. The re-imagined STLC will include a building program of 174,237 square feet (gross floor area) with a 650-1000 flexible seat Main Theatre and 300 seat Acoustic Hall, program spaces, bridge connection to Meridian Hall and Scott Street improvements. TIMELINE: July 2023, City Council was advised to adopt the St. Lawrence Centre Design Competition jury's selection of Hariri Pontarini Architects, LMN Architects, Tawaw Architecture Collective, Smoke Architecture and SLA as the winning submission for the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts Design Competition. As of September 2024, a preliminary design and costing study has been completed by consultants and forwarded to the city of Toronto. Following review of costing for the redevelopment, the owners have determined that the project should not proceed due to financial risks and has been cancelled. *The total project value was estimated at $421 million following an updated cost estimate. *SLA are a nature-based design studio based out of Europe, with offices in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Norway.
