As of October 17, 2023, construction has commenced. A firm timeline for construction completion has not been established. A detailed scope has not yet been determined. West Walnut Street Improvements Work on the West Walnut Street revitalization project in Johnson City progressed this week as crews installed curb and guttering on a section of West Walnut Street between Buffalo Street and Southwest Avenue. Sidewalk installation is also underway in parts of Earnest, Sevier and West Walnut streets. The new West Walnut Street roadway will have sidewalks on both sides, on-street parking and a a dedicated bike lane. The design will feature traditional traffic calming measures, including raised intersections and slight curves. Crews are working to improve a concrete vault housing electrical connections on West Watauga Avenue at State of Franklin Road. Johnson City's Public Works Department has closed a section of West Walnut Street between Boyd Street and 712 W. Walnut St. for ongoing sewer and stormwater work. That project is estimated to end sometime in November. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
