PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The work to be performed consists, in general, of a 6-mile-long multiuse path from the Kern River Channel to 7thStandard Road. The trail would run in a north-south orientation. The trail would be 12-feet-wide and constructed of asphalt with 4-foot-wide dirt shoulders. A chain-linked fence would be installed on both sides of the trail where fencing does not exist. There will be three new multiuse path crossings (bridges) within the Friant Kern Canal right of way and a fourth over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad right of way. The three path crossings consist of (1) a bridge crossing over the outfall of the Friant-Kern Canal located within the Kern River floodplain, (2) a golf cart path undercrossing adjacent to the Links at Riverlakes Golf Course, and (3) a bridge adjacent to Madison Grove Park spanning the Friant Kern Canal. A prefabricated pedestrian overcrossing steel structured bridge would be constructed over the BNSF railway. The trail would be used for alternative transportation and recreation; as well as serve as an interconnection to community parks, school, shopping centers, and the Kern River Parkway. The trail would increase pedestrian and bicyclist safety, promote active modes of transportation, and reduce traffic congestion. Trail Improvements and Railroad Overcrossing The 12-feet-wide asphalt trail runs from the Kern River to 7th Standard Road. Appropriate striping, pavement markings, and associated signage would be installed along the trail; existing poles would be utilized to the greatest extent practical. This package also includes the BNSF Railroad Overcrossing. Three Crossings The work to be performed consists, in general, of the construction of three multiuse path crossings within the Friant-Kern Canal right of way (Bureau of Reclamation's right of way). The work includes the construction of a new pedestrian bridge crossing over the outfall of the Friant-Kern Canal located within the Kern River floodplain, the construction of a golf cart path undercrossing adjacent to the Links at Riverlakes Golf Course and within the Friant-Kern Canal right of way, and the construction of a pedestrian bridge crossing over the Friant-Kern Canal and adjacent to Madison Grove Park also within the Friant-Kern Canal right of way. The items of work includes utility relocation, earthwork, rock slope protection, reinforced concrete construction, furnishing and installing prefabricated steel truss bridges, furnishing and installing precast concrete arch system, construction of drainage items, pavement repair, fencing, NPDES compliance, and dust control, all in compliance with the plans and special provisions.
