What costs $200 million and is located about 18 stories underground Louisville's newest tunnel and storage basins. Louisville-Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District broke ground on the Waterway Protection Tunnel in January. The tunnel and basins are expected to improve the quality of the area's waterways by helping to prevent sewage from overflowing into them. The tunnel and the building of storage basins throughout the area are part of the project. It's the result of a federal consent decree that involves improving the city's sewer system. The 2.5-mile tunnel will be about 20 feet in diameter and begins at 12th and Rowan streets in Louisville and ends near the Home of the Innocents on East Main Street. When complete, it will be able to store up to 37 million gallons of combined rainwater and sewage, according to a news release. The water eventually will be sent to a treatment center before heading to the Ohio River. The boring machine that will be used in creating the tunnel is being retooled in Pennsylvania and will arrive in Louisville in September with boring to begin in October. Watch this animation of the boring machine in action. The video was provided by the Louisville-Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District. The tunnel is expected to be mostly complete by the end of 2020.
