Construction of an intermodal terminal that will allow for goods to be moved in a unique containers for the entire journey, using more than one mode of transportation to carry it: truck, rail or ship. The site is on a 400-acre parcel of CN-owned land in the southwest portion of urban Milton. It would be bordered by Tremaine Road to the west, Britannia Road to the north, Lower Base Line to the south and Highway 25 to the east. The proposed facility would transfer cargo containers between rail cars and trucks to move goods eastward cross the Greater Toronto Area and throughout North America. The facility would be approximately 2900 metres in length and have the capacity to handle four trains per day. Once completed, the terminal would operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Milton Logistics Hub will also include a family bicycle trail connecting existing and planned paths, and raised earthen berms topped off with native Ontario vegetation and trees to reduce the effects of noise and blend into the natural environment of the area. TIMELINE: Project is conceptual. While both the federal government and Canadian Transportation Agency approved CN's application, the Halton Municipalities and Conservation Halton disputed the approvals and appealed to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Federal Court of Canada, and the Federal Court of Appeals. In January 2021, the federal government approved the proposed Milton hub project and in November 2021 the Canadian transportation Agency (CTA) approved CN's application for a railway line. In August of 2022, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice released its decision, siding with local municipalities and conservation authorities and ruling that CN is not excused from following local and provincial environmental and other protection laws however the ruling leaves enforcement up to local communities. The Halton Municipalities and Conservation Halton have appealed the ruling, desiring a more comprehensive and effective approach throughout the province's planning systems. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has been granted intervener status, which will allow them to question CN Rail as to decisions regarding adherence to municipal and provincial laws. Further update may be available spring 2024.
